Max Theuer

Maximilian Theuer (born December 7, 1878 in Vienna ; † June 26, 1949 there ) was an Austrian architect and building researcher .

Life

Max Theuer, born the son of the architect Franz Xaver Theuer, studied at the Technical University of Vienna after attending a grammar school in Vienna and received his doctorate in 1912 with a thesis on Leon Battista Alberti . During his studies, he made several study trips to Italy, Greece and Turkey and worked on the excavations of the Austrian Archaeological Institute in Ephesus in 1903 and 1910 . From 1903 to 1911 Theuer worked in the Lower Austrian Lieutenancy, where he was involved in several projects. After completing his doctorate, Theuer moved to the Chair of Architecture at the Technical University of Vienna as an assistant, where he completed his habilitation in 1919 on the Greek-Doric peripteral temple . At first, Theuer worked as a freelance architect parallel to his university career and was responsible for several residential and commercial buildings as well as for public buildings, mostly in joint projects, but subsequently concentrated increasingly on his teaching and research activities. From 1919 to 1921, Theuer held the chair for architecture at the Technical University of Vienna on behalf of Max Fabiani, and from 1921 he was an associate professor for architectural design. From 1924 until his retirement in 1948 Theuer was a full professor for building history, architectural form theory and architecture at the Vienna University of Technology. From 1926 to 1935 Theuer took part in the excavation campaigns of the Austrian Archaeological Institute in Ephesus. In addition to reconstruction drawings of numerous buildings, he also writes articles on the publications of the Celsus Library and the Belevi Mausoleum .

A street in Vienna's 22nd district is named after Max Theuer .
