Maxi López , (born April 3, 1984 in Buenos Aires ) with real name Maximiliano Gastón López , is an Argentine football player who also has an Italian passport . The striker has been under contract with CR Vasco da Gama since 2018 .

Career

López began his career in 1997 at River Plate Buenos Aires , where he made his debut in the 2001/02 season as a 17-year-old in the A-Team. With River Plate he won the Clausura in 2002, 2003 and 2004. In January 2005 he was signed by FC Barcelona , who needed a new striker due to injury problems . On February 6, 2005 he finally made his debut in the Spanish Primera División . In the 0-2 defeat against Atlético Madrid , coach Frank Rijkaard replaced him in the 78th minute for Oleguer . Three weeks later, on February 23, López came to his debut in the UEFA Champions League against Chelsea . After being substituted on for Ludovic Giuly in the 64th minute, he promptly scored the goal to make it 1-1 in the 67th minute. In the 73rd minute he did the preparatory work for 2-1 by Samuel Eto'o . The game was won 2-1. This hit remained his only competitive goal in the dress of FCB . By the end of the season, the attacker made seven more league appearances, but was only a supplementary player and was never in the starting line-up. He signed a four-year contract with this club and was together with Pablo Cesar Barrentos, Hector Bracamonte and Maxi Morales the fourth Argentine player of the club. In February 2009 he was loaned to Grêmio Porto Alegre . In mid-January 2010, López moved to Catania Calcio and signed a contract there until June 30, 2014.

On January 27, 2012, AC Milan announced the signing of López on loan. There was a purchase option. However, this was not pulled and López returned to Catania after half a year.

National team

López was a U-national of Argentina. At the U-17 World Cup in 2001 , he was in the South American squad, scored three goals in five games and led his team to the semi-finals of the tournament. There they lost to the eventual winner France. López received the red card in injury time . In the game for third place, the team disappointed with a 3-0 defeat against the selection from Burkina Faso.
