Maxim Vladimirovich Sergijevski ( Russian Максим Владимирович Сергиевский ; born October 13 . Jul / 25. October  1892 greg. In Moscow ; † 20th June 1946 ) was a Russian-Soviet linguist and Romanist .

Live and act

Sergievsky finished his studies at Moscow's Lomonosov University in 1916 . From 1925 to 1946 he was a professor at the Moscow State University (newly created chair for Romance-Germanic linguistics).

Sergijewski was one of the founders of Romance studies in the Soviet Union . He dealt with the history, grammar and dialectology of Romance languages as well as Slavic-Romance language contact (especially Romanian- Slavic and Moldovan- Slavic language contact). Both his History of the French Language (1938) and his Introduction to Romance Linguistics (1952) have long been among the standard works of Romance studies at Soviet universities.

Sergijewski postulated the thesis of the independence of the Moldovan language compared to Romanian . Due to the intensive contact with the East Slavic languages, Moldovan, which belongs to the East Romance languages, has developed phonetically and lexically compared to Romanian.

Sergijewski also dealt with the historical grammar of German and especially with the Romani . Together with Alexei Petrovich Barannikow he edited the first Gypsy-Russian dictionary (1938). He was a member of the Gypsy Lore Society .
