The Helinet Eissportarena is an ice rink with bowling center in the city of Hamm , North Rhine-Westphalia . Today, the hall serves primarily as the venue for the home games of the regional ice hockey league team Hammer Eisbären , but also as an ice skating and event hall. The hall was named after the disused Maximilian colliery , on the site of which the Maximilianpark now stands, to which the ice rink also belongs.

geography

Geographical location

The hall is located in the east of the city of Hamm in the Uentrop district and there in the Werries district. It stands on the corner of Ostwennemarstrasse and Karl-Koßmann-Strasse immediately south of the Maxi-Center shopping center and the Maxipark Arena and directly north of the Städtischen Freiherr vom Stein Gymnasium and the Maximilianpark behind it.

Transport links

The sports facilities can be reached via public transport with city bus lines 1, 3, 6 and 33. The closest stops are Maxi-Center and Maximilian Park. The closest motorway exits are the A2 junctions Hamm and Hamm-Uentrop.

Construction of the hall

The hall has a grandstand on the western long side of the ice surface, which mostly has standing room. The grandstand is placed on top of the changing rooms and rooms for the technical equipment of the hall, as well as the parking space for the ice processing machine . The grandstand can be reached from the outside via two stairwells, in the hall two more staircases lead up from the ice surface level to the grandstand. On the south side of the play area there is a bar to the right of the main entrance and to the left the offices, the skate rental and the cash desk. The bowling alley is located above on the 1st floor, with a panoramic window providing a view of the ice rink. On the ground floor there is additional standing space behind the gate. On the east side there are only the benches for the ice hockey teams. The north curve of the hall offers additional standing room at ground level. The hall is approved for a total of 2000 spectators. The ice ring has been equipped with a plexiglass attachment since the 2013/14 season, which replaced the old safety nets. The installation was carried out by the Hammer Eisbären fans and the Lippe-Hockey Hamm club.

history

The hall was built at the beginning of the 1980s, the construction and its circumstances later became part of a forgery and corruption scandal involving the then Hammer sports director. It was initially the home ground of the ice hockey department of ASV Hamm ( Hammer Eisbären ), which competed for the first time in the 1st League North , the then second-highest division in German ice hockey, in the 1994/95 season. In the 1997/98 season, ASV Hamm went bankrupt. The dissolved ASV Hamm was replaced by ESC Hamm ( Hammer Huskies ), who used the hall as their home ground in the following years, until it too became insolvent and dissolved in the Regionalliga in 2004.

Today the hall is used by the Hammer Eisbären club, which was founded as a development association for young people, as the home ground of the ice hockey Oberliga West .

Kenston Intermezzo

Following the bankruptcy of Spielbetriebs GmbH der Hammer Eisbären at the end of the 2013/14 season, the Kenston Group from Cologne initially wanted to secure gaming operations in Hamm and take over the ice rink from the city of Hamm and its subsidiary Maximilianpark GmbH. During the summer, negotiations between the city of Hamm and the Kenston Group turned out to be difficult on the basis of an expert report commissioned by the investor. Last but not least, the demand based on the expert opinion to want to take over the hall along with 4 million euros from the city created increasing reluctance among the city administration. Finally, on July 28, 2014, the Kenston Group announced that it would take over the game operations at league rivals Duisburg. This was followed on August 21, 2014 by Kenston's exit from the Hammer Eisbären and from negotiations with the city of Hamm. The Kenston company also announced the withdrawal of the Hammer Eisbären from the big leagues. According to the provisions of the LEV NRW, however, only the owner of the license is legitimized, this is the Lippe-Hockey-Hamm association. In the remaining weeks until the start of the season, a crisis team led by sponsor spokesman Werner Nimmert was able to start playing.

Hammer ice EG

Hammer Eis EG is a registered cooperative that will ensure the operation of the hall from 2015 for six seasons and at the same time renovate the hall. The city council of Hamm had previously commissioned Maximilianpark GmbH to negotiate a corresponding lease agreement with representatives of Hammer Eis EG, which was concluded in July 2015. If the concept of the cooperative failed, the city council decided to close the hall.

In April 2016, the ice rink was renamed HeLiNet Eissportarena as part of a name sponsorship.
