Maximilian Prechtl

Maximilian Prechtl (born October 20, 1757 in Hahnbach as Georg Prechtl , † June 12, 1832 in Amberg ) was Professor of Dogmatics and Morals in Amberg and the last abbot of Michelfeld Monastery .

After primary school in Hahnbach, he attended high school in Amberg. After high school in 1775 he entered the Benedictine monastery Michelfeld and received the religious name Maximilian when he was dressed . He took his religious vows on November 25, 1776 and was ordained a priest on September 22, 1781 by Bamberg's auxiliary bishop Adam Behr . For the next few years he was appointed chaplain at the Nonnberg Benedictine Monastery near Salzburg . In addition to legal and theological studies at Salzburg University, he learned French and Italian during this time. In 1785 he returned to Michelfeld. In addition to a pastoral position in Gunzendorf, he taught theology in the monastery and from 1786 also gave lectures on German and Bavarian law. On October 25, 1794, he was appointed professor of dogmatics and morals at the Lyceum in Amberg. In addition, Amberg was appointed pastor of the Maltese Coming House. On February 16, 1799, he gave the funeral speech for the late Elector Karl Theodor . After he named not only his strengths, but also his weaknesses, his professorship was withdrawn and he was demoted to the position of teacher of the second rhetoric at the grammar school. On January 14, 1800 he was unanimously elected abbot of the Michelfeld monastery. As a result, he had a school building built in Michelfeld. After the abolition of the monastery during the secularization , Prechtl moved to Vilseck for eight years and then returned to Amberg. In 1821 he was offered the position of auxiliary bishop in Passau , which he declined for health reasons. The same applied to the position offered in the diocese of Regensburg in 1826 as president of the Benedictine monastery in Metten .

In Amberg, Prechtlstrasse was named after Maximilian Prechtl.
