biography

His father was Adalbert Schönowsky von Schönwies (1826-1891). He attended from 1877 to 1881 the military secondary school in Güns , 1881/82 the Naval Academy Fiume and 1884–86 the pioneer cadet school in Hainburg an der Donau , but entered the infantry cadet school in Prague in 1886 due to lack of success . The following year he entered the service of the infantry regiment no. 55 and was established in 1893 to lieutenant promoted, 1896 Lieutenant 1906 Captain 2nd class, 1st class 1909, 1915 Major 1917 Lieutenant Colonel and entered 1920 as Tit.Obst. in pension. Initially, carelessness and thoughtlessness hampered his career, but this changed over time.

From 1897–99 he worked as a (civil) adjunct at the Garsten prison and during that time prepared privately for the final exam at the Austro-Hungarian War School in Vienna, but was not admitted. In 1900 he took the subaltern officer course for the Imperial and Royal Landwehr and came to Infantry Regiment No. 19. In addition to serving in the troops, he was subsequently employed as a teacher of the German language, gunnery and weaponry at military educational institutions. Since 1909 with the Landwehr Infantry Regiment No. 1, he was transferred in 1911 as a concept officer to the Imperial and Royal Ministry for National Defense . He returned to the troops at the outbreak of the First World War and was in the field from November 1914, interrupted only by about three months of work in the Austro-Hungarian War Press Office in Vienna in 1915. At first he fought on the Eastern Front , for example on the San , near Krakow , in the battle of Gorlice-Tarnów , in the re- conquest of Lviv , etc., but ended up with the Rifle Regiment No. 1 commanded by him after the Russian breakthrough at Olyka- Lutsk in June 1916 caught in the crossfire of criticism. However, he was able to justify himself in the course of the judicial proceedings brought by himself. The following year he and his unit were transferred to the Italian front, where he operated on the Piavefront . In the spring of 1918, however, he was commissioned to compile the history of his regiment and was thus released from service at the front.

In his early days he had a rather easier view of life, later he proved himself to be an excellent troop officer and created some useful aids for the army.

writer

Schönowsky was interested in literature from a young age. From the 1890s he dealt with military science studies and was considered a respected specialist writer. As a result of the collapse of the dual monarchy, he no longer completed the overall presentation of the history of his regiment; With his work on Lutsk, in which he combines the liveliness of the eyewitness with a critical attitude and thoroughness of the specialist, he described an important phase from it and characterized the nature of the old Austrian army.

He also wrote poems and plays. He received the Lower Austrian State Prize for two of his dramas and some of his plays were performed in theaters in Vienna. In the drama “ War ” he dealt with the right to wage war . He also showed his talent in short stories and novels .
