Maximilian von Groller-Mildensee
Maximilian von Groller-Mildensee (also Maximilian Groller von Mildensee ; born June 5, 1838 in Prague ; † May 20, 1920 in Vienna ) was an Austrian professional officer (most recently a colonel ), provincial Roman archaeologist and mapping sub-director of the Military Geographic Institute in Vienna.
Life
As the son of the professional officer Major Johann Groller von Mildensee, he also chose the officer career and joined the 6th Artillery Regiment of the Imperial and Royal Army at the age of 20. A year later he took part in the campaign of 1859 in Italy. From 1864 to 1866 he completed an officer course at the Theresian Military Academy in Wiener Neustadt . In 1885 Groller was transferred to the Military Geography Institute and in 1888 made a contribution to the precise measurement of the Austro-Hungarian-Romanian border. In 1890 he was appointed head of the topographic department of the Military Geographic Institute. In 1896 he was finally retired with the rank of colonel . His wife, Emma von Groller († 1922), also made a name for herself as an archaeologist, especially during the excavation of three burial mounds in Donnerskirchen in 1910 and 1911.
activity
As technical director, von Groller-Mildensee played a key role in the exploration of the Limes in Austria ( Noric Limes and Pannonian Limes ) in the early years . As a real member of the Austrian Archaeological Institute (ÖAI) he accepted the position of excavation director offered to him by the newly founded Limes Commission of the philosophical-historical department of the Austrian Academy of Sciences in Vienna. In this function he was mainly active in the excavations on the areas of the legionary camps of Carnuntum ( Bad Deutsch-Altenburg ) and Lauriacum ( Lorch ) and in search of Ulmus at the barren monastery in Königshof . In addition, due to his knowledge in the fields of structural engineering and mechanics, he also wrote works on the block construction of barracks and their heating systems.
