Maximilien d'Yvoy

Maximilien van Hangest-Genlis d'Yvoy (born June 14, 1621 in Asperen , Netherlands ; † December 14, 1686 near Cologne ) was a Dutch fortress builder , shipbuilding engineer and cartographer .

Life

D'Yvoy was in the service of the Prince of Orange from 1655 . Under Friedrich von Dohna he became captain of the Dutch army and the principality of Orange , later vice governor and commander of the Schenkenschanz fortification , which at that time was one of the strongest in Europe and was located on a peninsula in the Rhine.

From 1660 to 1675 Yvoy strengthened the fortifications of Geneva and brought them up to date, u. a. with the bastions “de Hollande” (1662), “Souverain” (1664), “d'Yvoy” (also: “du Polygone”, 1666) and “Bourgeois” (1668). In addition, around 1672 he converted the ships “The Big Bear” and “The Little Bear” for those of the Bernese military fleet on Lake Geneva . On December 26, 1666, he and his three sons were granted citizenship in Geneva for their services to the city.

In March 1676, d'Yvoy left Geneva to assist William II of Orange in the war against France. In 1686 at the latest, he returned to Geneva to expand the fortifications of Geneva. D'Yvoy also worked in the port of Morges and directed the construction of Coppet Castle for von Dohna , where his former superior had settled. Yvoy also made a map of the city.

Honors

The "Boulevard d'Yvoy" was named after d'Yvoy in Geneva.
