May Warden (born May 9, 1891 in Leeds , † October 5, 1978 in London ) was a British actress .

Life

May Warden was born in Leeds to the American actor Edward Warden and his wife Maud. Maud broke up with her middle-class family in order to marry the penniless actor. Her parents led a non-resident life, so May Warden never went to school. She began her theater career at the age of twelve. Since the late 1940s she appeared as Miss Sophie in the sketch Dinner for One in various variety theaters in the British seaside resort of Blackpool . Together with her stage partner, the comedian Freddie Frinton , the then 72-year-old Warden became famous through a performance of Dinner for One on the NDR- TV show "Guten Abend, Peter Frankenfeld !" And a subsequent TV recording by NDR in June 1963, directed by Heinz Dunkhase, known in German-speaking countries. This is shown on television every New Year's Eve and is the most repeated broadcast of all time and is thus also noted in the Guinness Book of Records .

Dinner for One was her first television appearance, but around 30 other television roles followed by 1977, in which she mainly played grandmothers. She played in an episode of the Doctor Who series and had a small role as a homeless person in Stanley Kubrick's classic A Clockwork Orange from 1971. She had recurring roles as a grandmother in the British television series Ours Is a Nice House (1969-1970) and Billy Liar (1973-1974). She performed as an actress until a year before her death.

In 1915 she married the comedian Silvester Stewart († 1973), they had two daughters and two sons together. Her daughter Audrey also became an actress. May Warden died in London in 1978 at the age of 87.
