The McCarthy shrew ( Sorex mccarthyi ) is a little-researched shrew from the genus of the red- toothed shrew ( Sorex ). Together with the Salvin shrew ( Sorex salvini ), the San Cristobal shrew ( Sorex cristobalensis ), the Sclater shrew ( Sorex sclateri ) and the light-toothed shrew ( Sorex stizodon ), it forms the Sorex salvini species group. The Art epithet honors the American mammalogen Timothy John McCarthy (1943–2011), who collected the holotype in 1995.

features

The only specimen measured is the holotype , which is in the Carnegie Museum of Natural History . It is an adult female with a head-to-torso length of 59.5 mm. The tail length is 51.5 mm, the hind foot length 13 mm, the ear length 7.5 mm and the weight 4.22 g. The McCarthy shrew is the smallest species of the Sorex salvini species group after the light - toothed shrew. Both the back and the peritoneum are rusty brown. The tail is slightly two-colored, reddish brown on the top and a little lighter on the underside. The tail length is 87 percent of the head-trunk length. The lower first incisor (I1) has a pigmented denticle . In relation to the width of the skull and the width of the skull, the McCarthy shrew has a shorter row of teeth than the San Cristobal shrew, the Salvin shrew and the Sclater shrew. There are five tooth cusps. The first and second are great. The third is a little smaller than the fourth. The fifth is tiny. The teeth are pigmented dark red.

distribution

The McCarthy shrew is the Cerro de Celaque at El Naranjo in Lempira Department in Honduras endemic .

Habitat and way of life

The McCarthy shrew inhabits cloud forests at altitudes of 2560 m. Nothing is known about their way of life. Other mammals sighted in the habitat are Cryptotis goodwini , Heteromys desmarestianus , Peromyscus oaxacensis , Peromyscus beatae , Peromyscus mexicanus , Reithrodontomys mexicanus, and Scotinomys teguina .

Threat and protection

The McCarthy shrew is currently not covered by the IUCN . The species is so far only known from the holotype and too little information is available to be able to make statements about the population status. Further studies are therefore necessary in order to identify any hazards. The distribution area is in the Cerro Celaque National Park .
