McClenty Hunter

McClenty Douglas Hunter Jr. (* around 1985 in Detroit ) is an American modern jazz musician ( drums ) .

Live and act

Hunter grew up in Columbia, Maryland , where he began as a drummer in his community at the age of twelve. Darin Atwater, the leader of the church music there, became his mentor and also let him play in his Soulful Symphony . He studied from 2005 on a scholarship at Howard University in Washington, DC with Grady Tate , which he completed with a bachelor's degree in music education. In 2007 he obtained a Masters degree in Jazz Studies from the Juilliard School of Music , where he had studied with Carl Allen .

During his student days in New York, Hunter was a member of Eric Reed's trio , to be heard on his Grammy- nominated album The Dancing Monk (2011). From 2012 he toured for three years with Kenny Garrett ( Pushing the World Away , Grammy nomination 2013) and five years with Dave Stryker ( Messin with Mr. T , 2015). His debut album The Groove Hunter was released in 2018 . He also directs the KIPP Academy String and Rhythm Orchestra . Hunter also played with Lou Donaldson , Cedar Walton , Buster Williams , Curtis Fuller , Les McCann , Wycliffe Gordon , Peter Bernstein , Eric Alexander , Mike LeDonne and Paul Bollenback . He has also worked on recordings by Jim Snidero ( Interface , 2011) and Javon Jackson ( Live at Smoke: Expression , 2013). In the field of jazz he was involved in 26 recording sessions between 2001 and 2017.
