Eric Wheeler

Eric N. Wheeler (* around 1980 in Washington, DC ) is an American musician ( double bass , composition ) of modern jazz .

Wheeler was initially promoted by his mother; He received classical music training when he was a student in the DC Youth Orchestra Program at the age of nine, and attended the Duke Ellington School for the Arts at the age of 13, where he studied jazz music. He had lessons from Carolyn Kellock . During this time he also performed in Canada, France, England and Germany. In 1998 he received a grant from the National Symphony Youth Fellowship Program and studied with Jeff Weisner, bassist in the National Symphony Orchestra . From autumn 2000 he studied jazz at Howard University , with whose university ensemble under the direction of Fred Irby III he made his first recordings in 2001-06.

While studying at Howard University, Wheeler worked in the Washington area in both classical and jazz music; he stepped u. a. in venues such as Bohemian Caverns , Blues Alley and the Kennedy Center . In 2006 he completed his studies with a master's degree after completing his bachelor's degree. Since then he has worked a. a. with Stefon Harris , Tim Warfield , Benny Golson , Curtis Fuller , Delfeayo Marsalis , Russell Malone , Pharoah Sanders , Dee Dee Bridgewater , Terell Stafford and Cyrus Chestnut ( Kaleidoscope , 2018). He released the album Escape Velocity (2016) under his own name . He currently lives in Brooklyn, New York and teaches at Columbia University's School of the Arts . In the field of jazz, he was involved in 22 recording sessions between 2001 and 2018, including a. also with Todd Marcus , Greg Murphy , Eric Wyatt , Lauren Henderson , Theo Croker ( Star People Nation , 2019) and McClenty Hunter .
