The McDonald Bay is a bay 16 km wide at its entrance on the coast of the East Antarctic Queen Marie Land . It is located immediately west of Mabus Point between Adams Island and the Haswell Islands .

It was discovered and mapped by the team from the West Base of the Australasian Antarctic Expedition (1911-1914) under the direction of the Australian polar explorer Douglas Mawson . The Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names named them in 1955 after Edwin Anderson McDonald (1907–1988), commander of the icebreaker USS Burton Island in Operation Windmill (1947–1948) for the establishment of astronomical observation stations along the coast of Queen Marie Land , the Kaiser -Wilhelm-II.-Lands and the Knox and Budd coast .
