McKey is a census-designated place (CDP ) in Sequoyah County in the US state of Oklahoma .
According to the 2000 census , it had a population of 135 in an area of 15.4 km². The population density is 8.9 inhabitants per km².
McKey is north of the Illinois River between Salisaw in the east and Vian in the west on an old railway line, the Old Osage and Arkansas Valley Railroad . The railroad runs north and roughly parallel to Interstate 40 , which runs roughly three miles south of the CDP between railroad and Illinois in roughly an east-west direction.
The CDP groups the former MacKey's Salt Works , a salt works in Permian rock salts . The salt came to the surface in the form of saline springs and was extracted there by boiling.
A post office for McKey existed between March 13, 1891 and July 14, 1928.
