geography

River course

The river has its source on the northeast slopes of the Selwyn Range and initially flows approximately 15 km southeast to the settlement of Answer Downs on Cannington Road . There he turns his course to the northeast and follows the road to the small town of McKinlay on the Landsborough Highway . It crosses under the highway and continues its course to the northeast, where it flows south of Gilliat into the Gilliat River .

In its middle and lower reaches, the McKinlay River forms a wide flood plain in which it runs parallel in many channels.
