Mealasta ( Scottish Gaelic Eilean Mhealasta , also Mealista or Eilean Mhealastadh ) is a Scottish island in the Outer Hebrides . It is located in the council area of the same name and was historically part of the traditional county of Ross-shire . The now uninhabited island once had a permanent population, as evidenced by the ruins of Shieling huts near the north shore.
geography
Mealasta is located in the North Atlantic off the Isle of Lewis , from which it is separated by a sound at least 850 meters wide. It is located in front of the northern entrance to the Loch Resort , which marks the border between Lewis and Harris , the two parts of the twin island of Lewis and Harris . Opposite Lewis is the Mealista desert . The islands of Scarp and Fladday are around four kilometers south .
The island is a maximum of 1.6 kilometers long and 1.1 kilometers wide and has an area of 1.2 square kilometers. It usually rises steeply out of the water and towers to a maximum height of 77 meters.
