The Mechi – Mahakali Railway , English Mechi – Mahakali Electric Railway is the project of a 945 km long railway line from east to west through Nepal . The name of the project is derived from the names of the Mechi administrative zone , where the railway begins, and the Mahakali administrative zone , where the railway ends.

history

Around 2010 the idea of building several longer railway lines emerged, including the Mechi – Mahakali railway, which is considered the Nepalese government's first railway project. The feasibility study for the construction of the line was undertaken by the Indian government under the bilateral cooperation agreement between India and Nepal.

In March 2013, the detailed project plan for the 135 km long Bardibas - Simara - Birgunj section was completed, with only the Bardibas - Simara section belonging to the east-west link. The next section to be tackled for detailed planning is the 223 km long Simara – ButwalSiddharthanagar route . Here, too, only the part of Simara – Butwal belongs to the east-west connection. All sections are designed to include part of the east-west link while also providing a link to an Indian border crossing.

Construction of the line began in June 2014 with the laying of the foundation stone for the first five-kilometer construction lot of the 108-kilometer section from Simara to Bardibas. The agreement to complete the construction lot within two years was signed by the contractors in December 2013, but the start of work was delayed because the landowners' compensation had to be completed first. In the summer of 2014 it was announced that two further construction lots of 65 km and 28 km in length should be put out to tender shortly.

At both end points, the first route section will meet other new routes to be created. Simara is on the planned route Raxhaul ( India ) - Kathmandu and Bardibas is the provisional end point of the route from Jaynagar (India) via Janakpur , the first section of which is already in operation across the border from Nepal, and the 2018 [obsolete] to Kurtha to be opened behind Janakpur.
