history

The Mecklenburg straw pictures are simple, folkloric picture compositions in a realistic style that are produced in the vicinity of Schwerin . The straw pictures are unique . The handcrafted straw pictures were preferably made in the long winter months in order to make extra income by selling them as souvenirs to tourists in the Baltic Sea . In the mid- 1960s , the GDR government discovered the importance of inexpensive but also decorative Mecklenburg straw pictures and had them mass- produced using industrial methods . Well-known manufacturers of the murals were Bärenburg and Eilers KG in Schwerin and the state-owned company VEB Bild und Souvenir in Neugersdorf in Saxony.

Manufacturing

The harvested straw was dried, then cut open and bent open. A scrap of straw was obtained which, ironed on, was composed into pictures using assembly technology . Different colored straws are glued onto black or brown paper in a single layer. The artists do not sign their work and mostly remain anonymous.

Motifs
