history

Mednoye is one of the oldest villages in the upper Volga region, known since the end of the 14th century. Already in the 16th century, the town, which is conveniently located on the way from Moscow and Tver to Torzhok and Novgorod and on the Tverza, was a regionally important center of handicrafts and a stopover on the trade route, which at the beginning of the 18th century became the most important connection between Moscow and Saint Petersburg .

In this capacity Mednoye was mentioned by Adam Olearius , who traveled through 1634 and 1638 on his diplomatic mission to Russia and Persia . Alexander Radishchev dedicated a chapter of his trip from Petersburg to Moscow to the place in 1790 .

In Mednoye there was an NKVD site. The Mednoye Memorial today commemorates the victims of the mass murders of Polish citizens in 1940 .

In the Mednoye area, the advance of the German Wehrmacht in this area was stopped in October 1941 during World War II . The place itself was from the 17th only to the 21/22. October occupied by the German troops, while the eastern Kalinin (Tver), which was taken on the same day, was held until December.
