Tverza in Tver |
The Tverza ( Russian Тверца ) is a 188 km long left tributary of the Volga in the European part of Russia .
River course
The Tvertsa River originates on the southern edge of vyshny volochyok where she channels the reservoir Wyschnewolozkoje and Mstino Lake is connected. Via the Mstino lake, which is the source lake of the Msta , the Twerza has a connection to the Baltic Sea via Msta, Ilmensee , Wolchow , Ladoga and Neva .
Initially, the Tverza flows south through the Tver Oblast . About 5 km southwest of Spirowo it crosses the M10 trunk road . A little later it takes on its largest tributary, the Ossuga . Shortly afterwards she reached Torzhok . After flowing through the city, it changes in an easterly direction.
Shortly after the confluence of the Logowesch , it reaches the place Mednoye , where there is a mass grave with Polish victims of the Katyn massacre in World War II . On September 2, 2000, a memorial to the victims was inaugurated. A memorial for Soviet victims of the NKVD who were executed in Mednoye is planned, but cannot be completed due to a lack of funding.
A little later the Tverza reaches the city of Tver , where it joins the Volga.
The Tverza is mainly fed by the runoff of the Vysnevolotskoye and snowmelt water. It is frozen between November / early January to late March / April. The river is an average of 45–90 m wide.
