Megalara garuda is a very large digger wasp species . The males reach 32 to 34 mm, the females 20 to 22 mm body length; the length of the forewings in males is 24 to 25 mm, in females 19 to 20 mm. So far, very little is known about behavior and habitat, as well as about the purpose of the powerful mandibles of the males.
The name of the genus is a suitcase word from the Greek μέγας (mégas; "large") and the two final syllables of the digger wasp genus Dalara . The epithet refers to Garuda , a mythical creature from Indonesian mythology.
discovery
The male and female holotypes were caught by entomologist Linn Kimsey on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi in December 2009 . In August 2011 the discovery was published in advance by the University of California (then still called Dalara garuda ) and described scientifically for the first time in March 2012. As paratypes , two male specimens were added to the first description , which had been caught in 1930 and kept in the Museum für Naturkunde in Berlin without generating any great scientific interest.
