The diesel-electric powered Megastar is a fast RoRo ferry that can run on liquefied natural gas ( LNG ) and diesel oil ( MDO ) as fuel. It was delivered to the Tallink Silja shipping company from the Meyer Turku shipyard in Turku , Finland , at the end of January 2017 .

history

On December 11, 2014, Tallink and Meyer Turku agreed a letter of intent. The ship was ordered on February 27, 2015. A sister ship that was optioned at the same time was not ordered. Construction under construction number 1391 began on August 4, 2015. On February 9, 2016, the Megastar was laid down. The Megastar was delivered on January 24, 2017 and has been in service on the Helsinki - Tallinn route since January 29 .

Technical specifications

The ferry offers space for 2800 passengers in three travel classes.

The power generation of the megastar is done by three Wärtsilä -12V50DF four-stroke dual-fuel engines and two Wärtsilä 6L50DF four-stroke dual-fuel engines that act on generators. It is driven by two electric propeller motors, so that the RoPax ferry reaches a nominal speed of 27 knots.

With LNG and MDO as fuel, the ship reduces sulfur oxide and nitrogen oxide emissions and can comply with Tier III emission limits and the additional restrictions for the Baltic Sea as a Sulfur Emission Control Area (SECA). The LNG is stored in the hull of the ship under the main deck in two storage tanks of 300 m³ each.
