Milestone Horstdorf

The milestone near Horstdorf is a small memorial in the town of Oranienbaum-Wörlitz in the Wittenberg district in Saxony-Anhalt . It is under monument protection and apparently has not yet been entered in the monument register.

It stands to the west of Horstdorf , north of the former train station. Here it is located on the western side of Landesstraße 133, not far from the tracks of the railway from Oranienbaum to Wörlitz .

History and shape

While many milestones east of Dessau have not been finally clarified whether they are original milestones that were used as myriameter stones or whether they were new creations, the milestone at Horstdort can be clearly assigned. It is located on the former connection from Dessau via Oranienbaum to Wörlitz and is not quite 15 kilometers away from Dessau. The Prussian mile was introduced as the official length measure in Anhalt in 1841. It was equivalent to 7,532 meters.

The stone with the inscription II miles from Dessau is directly related to the I miles stone near Oranienbaum. Both are no longer in what used to be the exact distance that corresponded to the mile. The Anhalt milestones all had their zero point at the castle in Dessau. In addition, near Kakau - east of Oranienbaum - there is a similar II-mile stone, but there with the addition of 15.0 km . The background to this is the gradual change in length dimensions. First a new mile of 7,500 meters was introduced in the early 1870s, then the kilometer replaced the mile in 1874. Therefore, the milestones are more often in 15-kilometer positions, for example at Porst or Quellendorf . The current location is probably explained by these shifts, perhaps even later, because there is evidence that the milestones were used as milestones for longer periods of time.

The gray sandstone was overturned in the ditch in 1986, but was saved.
