The milestone at Reuden is a small monument in the city of Zerbst / Anhalt in the Anhalt-Bitterfeld district in Saxony-Anhalt . Like all milestones, it is under monument protection , but cannot be found in the list of monuments .

location

At the eastern exit of Reuden / Anhalt on the southern side of the road between two trees. Today's federal highway 246 , on which the stone is located, is a later creation. The inscription connects the stone with the state road 57, the connection via Gollbogen to Zerbst. This is why the I-Myriameter stone is located near Gollbogen .

History and shape

Shortly after 1850, all the more important streets in Anhalt were given milestones at regular intervals , the counting of which began at the castle in Dessau. Their appearance was based on the then current Prussian model of the round base stone, their distances from one another corresponded to the Prussian mile . When the length measurement was changed to the kilometer in the course of the establishment of the German Empire , Anhalt had to be re-measured twice, as a compromise was first found that rounded off the Prussian mile (7532 meters) to 7500 meters. After the first measurement, the stones were only moved minimally.

When changing over to kilometers as a result of the second measurement, however, new stones had to be created in some cases, as myriameter stones, i.e. stones every 10,000 meters, were preferred in the former Principality of Anhalt-Zerbst . In theory, there were enough milestones available for this, since they were full milestones, but apparently not all the stones were present. While in other parts of Anhalt the milestones were left in their places and re-labeled, see for example the stone near Porst , they actually seem to have been changed a second time in Anhalt-Zerbst, as they are now at 10-kilometer intervals.

Since these look exactly like the milestones, it is difficult to tell them apart. However, the majority must assume that the milestones were reused and that new creations are only the exception. The center of this set-up as myriameter stones was Zerbst, although this had long since lost its function as the main residence. This was made possible by laws that were now also valid here, according to which many more places could represent the zero point, which was possible in Prussia since the 1830s. Therefore, the stone in its present form is a myriameter stone, as evidenced by the inscription II Myriameter von Zerbst . It was renewed in 2000, although it could no longer be safely deciphered. The 90 centimeter high stone is made of granite.
