Prussian milestone near Schellbach

The milestone near Schellbach is a listed small monument in the community of Gutenborn in the Burgenland district in Saxony-Anhalt .

There are two Prussian milestones on Bundesstraße 2 between Loitzschütz and Schellbach , both of which differ from their previous position along the road. The whole milestone at Schellbach is about 2.7 meters high and is located halfway between Gera and Zeitz on the old Prussian Chaussee from Berlin via Halle (Saale) and Weißenfels to Giebelroth , which has been the last place before the since 1815 ( Vienna Congress ) Border from Prussia to Thuringia. Today it is the southernmost remaining milestone on this road.

Only a few Prussian milestones have survived in this southern end of the more than 200-kilometer-long Chaussee, and they are no longer at the right distances from one another. The half mile stone at Loitzschütz is only two hundred meters further north . But a Prussian mile was 7.532 kilometers, half a mile was 3.766 kilometers. So the stones must have historically been positioned differently to one another. But this is also indicated by the inscriptions on the milestone itself. They are Berlin 30 miles , Zeitz 1 mile and Gera 2 1/4 mile . Gera is only 14 kilometers away and not 16.8 kilometers, a deviation of 2.8 kilometers, which can be followed as far as Weißenfels, whose market was apparently later made the new zero point of the road.

In the monument list the distance indicator is the collection number 094 66112 as a small monument entered. It is mentioned here at Loitzschütz because it is in the corridor, but to make it easier to distinguish it, it is named after the nearby neighboring town of Schellbach. In contrast to the half-mile stone near Loitzschütz, it is on the western side of the road. The stone was restored in 2003 and the eagle plate broke in an attempted theft.
