Anhalt milestone near Warmsdorf

The milestone near Warmsdorf is a small monument in the community of Giersleben in the Saale-Wipper community in the Salzland district in Saxony-Anhalt .

To the east of the Wipper near Warmsdorf and Giersleben there is a Anhalt round base stone on Landesstraße 72 . A classification of the stones at the branches of the main connection Anhalts from Dessau via Köthen and Bernburg to Harz is always difficult when the inscriptions are no longer legible and other stones are no longer preserved or can also be interpreted uncertainly. That also applies to this milestone . The indication 1 mile can still be deciphered, but no reference point can be made out.

It is now known that the Anhalt mile corresponded to the Prussian mile , i.e. 7.532 kilometers long. In addition, the distance to Dessau, which apparently has not been preserved here, was always given on the one hand, and in some cases also the distance to the nearest town on the other. Even that is of no help here, because if you compare the stone with others, for example the milestone in Kleinpaschleben , then it would have to be the next town in the direction of Dessau, in the case of Warmsdorf Bernburg. But all other cities in the area are ruled out, as they are more than 7.532 kilometers away and there are additional reasons against it.

This means that the stone cannot be classified in the Anhalt road network for the time being. The most likely reason is that, like so many stones, it was converted into the Myriameter system, i.e. it had an additional information with a painted inscription that indicated the distance in 10-kilometer steps. This is also supported by the fact that a second, faded inscription was documented on the 90 centimeter high stone in the 1990s. A final clarification is still pending. The slightly crooked whole milestone is under monument protection and has the registration number 094 10093 in the monument register , where it is recorded near Giersleben.

Individual evidence

  1. Gollmer, 1997, p. 32.
  2. Most likely would then be Aschersleben on Bundesstraße 85 , the former main street of Anhalt, but would contradict the system and the street layout. Staßfurt an der L 72 did not belong to Anhalt, Sandersleben is almost impossible because of the milestone at Roda .
