Milestone (Wimmelburg birch sheep farm)

Prussian quarter milestone between Wimmelburg and Blankenheim

The milestone in birch sheep farming is a small monument between Blankenheim and Wimmelburg in the community of Mansfelder Grund-Helbra in the district of Mansfeld-Südharz in Saxony-Anhalt .

Milestones are only preserved so completely in a few places in Germany as between Langenbogen and Emseloh . Here, at the former Prussian state road from Berlin to Kassel , which was built in this section (Langenbogen - Nordhausen ) in the years 1824 to 1826, there were four milestones in the corridor of Wimmelburg alone, of which only the easternmost, a half-milestone near the City limits of Lutherstadt Eisleben , has not been preserved. It is believed that it disappeared as early as 1905. Whether it was dismantled during the paving work that took place at the time or whether it is still slumbering in the ground cannot be clarified.

The quarter milestone in the far west of Wimmelburg's corridor ( called the bear skin ) was threatened with this fate, because it was slightly buried beneath the road. In 1999, however, it was uncovered, lifted and placed on a paving platform at the edge of the field. It bears the typical inscription 1/4 mile and is more than 205 kilometers away from Dönhoffplatz in Berlin, where this road originated. A Prussian mile corresponds to 7.532 kilometers.

Like its eastern neighbors on Dorfbreite ( quarter milestone ) and in Wimmelburger Hölzchen ( whole milestone ), the quarter milestone on the bear skin near the birch sheep farm is a listed building and is registered in the monument register with the number 094 16117. The 60 centimeter high small bell is a monument to surveying and the history of transport in the 19th century, but is also a legal monument.
