Milestone (piethen)

Anhalt milestone at Piethen

The milestone at Piethen is located near the southwest of the village of Piethen in the city of Southern Anhalt in the Anhalt-Bitterfeld district in Saxony-Anhalt . It is under monument protection , but for incomprehensible reasons it is listed in the monument register as a milestone near Cattau with the number 094 14207.

The inscription on the Anhalt milestone reads I mile from Cöthen IV miles from Dessau , as has been reconstructed. This assigns the stone to one of the branches of the most important east-west connections of Anhalt, because this is oriented towards Dessau , has stone II miles from Dessau near Porst and stone IV miles from Dessau in Kleinpaschleben . The Chausseetraße, which led from Köthen to the south and southwest, each have an IV mile from Dessau -Stein, so that despite the small size of Anhalt there are several stones with the same inscription, even if it varies slightly.

Here, on the route from Köthen to the southwest, the stone is now on a less traveled route, as the main connection from Piethen via the Fuhne no longer leads via Cattau , but via Wieskau . The 77 centimeter high milestone was damaged several times by drives. In 2002 the round base stone was found split and therefore the Köthen Monument Preservation and the road maintenance department decided to protect the stone from future damage with a concrete base. The Anhalt mile corresponded to the Prussian mile and was 7.532 kilometers long.
