James D. Hansen

James Douglas Hansen (born June 18, 1949 in Tacoma , Washington, USA) is an American diplomat, journalist and media entrepreneur.

Life and career

Degree and State Department

After studying political science and philosophy at Oakland University in Rochester , James Hansen received his PhD and subsequently received a grant from the Dutch government that allowed him to do postgraduate studies in political science and statistical analysis at the Institute for Social Studies in The Hague to be completed. He then prepared for a diplomatic career at the State Department's Foreign Service Institute . From 1974 to 1975 he was Assistant to the Secretary of State for European Affairs, from 1975 to 1977 Vice Consul of the American Consulate General in Naples .

Journalistic career

In 1977 he left the diplomatic service and became a correspondent for numerous American and English newspapers and magazines, including La Stampa (Turin) in Italy and Daily Mail in Great Britain . He also worked as a consultant for the American television station CBS and for the popular science magazine New Scientist .

Media work

In 1985 he became the press spokesman for Carlo De Benedetti and head of the Olivetti press office in Ivrea , where he stayed until 1989. From 1989 to 1993 he moved to the media holding Fininvest , which was founded by Silvio Berlusconi in 1978, and initially became director of the public relations department, then head of financial communications, responsible for investor relations for the Standa company and the Mondadori publishing group , and head of External relations of Standa SpA and communication manager of Mediolanum Sport .

From 1993 to 1996 he worked again as a foreign correspondent from Italy for the daily newspapers Daily Telegraph and International Herald Tribune , after which he was press officer of STET / Telecom Italia until 1998 .

Hansen Worldwide

In 1999 he founded the company Hansen Worldwide Srl based in Milan, of which he is President and CEO (Managing Director). Hansen Worldwide is a consulting firm that specializes in advising Italian companies on foreign affairs; its clients also include North American and Asian companies.

From 2004 to 2015, Hansen Worldwide operated the "corrispondenti.net" service network for foreign correspondents in Italy, which has been discontinued but is still accessible as an archive.

Hansen's office has long represented The Economist news magazine in Italy and is still the Italian representative of the Wall Street Journal .

James Hansen was the editor-in-chief of the geopolitical magazine East , which is distributed in 22 countries. Currently (as of 2018) he heads the weekly internet columns “Nota diplomatica” and “Nota design”, which stand out from the usual press releases with their polished, ironic style.

More functions

Hansen is a founding member and was for a long time Vice President of the Associazione Italiana Investor Relations (AIIR). He publishes Animal Glamor , a magazine for animal lovers .
