Grotewiese is a district of Valbert and thus a district of Meinerzhagen in North Rhine-Westphalia . The place is on the Ihne and is in the west of the Sauerland ; he belongs to the Märkischer Kreis . The St. Maria Magdalena Church is in Grotewiese and is a magnet for pilgrims .

The pilgrimage site

Even if Grotewiese is not a recognized place of pilgrimage, this place has a religious and artistic reputation, which the diocese of Essen has made to preserve. Many pictures and symbols have made this place a place of pilgrimage and the Magdalenenkirche built in 1863 (probably designed by Arnold Güldenpfennig ) is a popular wedding church. The church is surrounded by a lovely garden and park-like meadows. There are several listed buildings and facilities in the village , which pilgrims looking for peace and quiet like to look at. In addition to the church, this includes in particular:

  • The parsonage with the Easter paintings,
  • the " Pinakothek der Gnade", murals at the entrance portal of the church,
  • the Magdalene wayside shrine on the east side of the parish grounds,
  • the Franziskuswand between the rectory and the church ,
  • the James Fountain (on the Way of St. James )
  • the Martinskapelle above the cemetery and
  • the Estenberg Cross.

Heidenstrasse memorial stone

The Heath Road is an old trade route that began in Leipzig, about Kassel and the Electorate of Cologne Sauerland Attendorn led, and Valbert, Meinerzhagen and Wipperfuerth continue to Cologne. In the 8th century the missionaries came over this road to Christianize the pagan Saxons. In the Middle Ages, pilgrims from Eastern Europe and East Germany also joined us on their way to Cologne, Trier and Aachen, from where they could move on to the tomb of the Apostle James in northwest Spain.

On May 5, 2007, a new memorial stone was erected and consecrated in the courtyard above the Grotewiese chapel. It is the 13th boundary stone on Heidenstrasse, and it is exactly on the boundary of the Olpe district and the Märkisches Kreis. A large bronze plate shows the course of Heidenstrasse from Leipzig to Grotewiese, the two district coats of arms and bears the following inscription:

“Heidenstrasse, centuries-old military and trade route from Leipzig to Cologne. In the Middle Ages also a pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela in Spain. Merchants and St. James pilgrims crossed the border between the Electorate of Cologne and the Duchy of Westphalia and the County of Mark, which still lives today as the border between the Olpe and Märkisches Kreis. The field name Schlagbaums Wiese for an adjacent plot of land indicates the historical context. "
