Master of the Life of Mary in Aachen

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A painter from the Cologne School of Painting , who was probably active in the last third of the 15th century in Aachen and possibly in Cologne , is referred to as the master of the Aachen life of the Virgin Mary (sometimes also called master of the Aachen cupboard doors or master of the Aachen tables ) . Since his name has not been passed down, this so-called emergency name was chosen, which refers to his traditional work. In addition to the master of the Aachen altarpiece and the Cologne master of the life of the Virgin Mary, he belongs to the group of painters who at the turn of the 16th century mainly worked in Cologne and were still entirely committed to a Baroque, late-Gothic sense of form and style.

Named work

Part of the life of Mary in Aachen
Marienleben, left wing

Aachener Marienleben , Cologne around 1485, oil on oak, height 105, width 62.5 centimeters per wing. Today it is in the Aachen Cathedral Treasury .

The panels belong to the large apse altar of the Gothic choir in the Aachen Minster and served as wings in front of the Ottonian Pala d'oro , which at that time formed the center of an altarpiece . When closed, the outer sides of the wings in the middle show the Mother of God with the child and Charlemagne , who kneels and hands over the model of the Aachen cathedral to the baby Jesus . Left and right are St. Leopardus and St. Bishop Blaise .

On the inside of the wings eight scenes from the life of the Virgin are shown in pairs, one on top of the other , typologically related to one another. In the top row from left to right: The Birth of Mary, the Visitation of the Virgin Mary , the Annunciation and Joachim and Anna at the Golden Gate. Below: The Man of Sorrows meets his mother, the Assumption of Mary into heaven , the presentation of Jesus in the temple and the passage of Mary to the temple.

The people depicted can be recognized as contemporaries of the painter. The scenes testify to the picturesque richness of detail and glow in unbroken colors. The landscape and architecture have a homely and contemporary feel. Details such as the lying Turkish crescent on a domed structure or the depiction of an elephant show the artist's attempt to use oriental features to indicate the actual scene of the event, the holy land .

The panel shows that the Aachen painter has based the design of the figures or the prayer desk clearly on the model of the master of the life of Mary who worked in Cologne, that his physiognomies and physicality are more linear and that the rooms have their own both more objective and at the same time livelier Preferred representation.
