Provost Melchior Zösch

Melchior Zösch CanReg (born December 26, 1725 in Knetzgau ; † November 23, 1802 in Triefenstein ) was an Augustinian canon and the last provost of the Triefenstein monastery .

Life

Melchior Zösch from Knetzgau in Lower Franconia made his profession on May 18, 1749 in the Augustinian canons of Triefenstein . In 1762 he is proven as a cantor . On November 26, 1783 he was elected provost in the fourth ballot as dean . His confirmation followed on March 11, 1784. Prince-Bishop Franz Ludwig von Erthal infuled him at the same time as the prelate Heinrich Göbhardt of Bronnbach Monastery on March 14, 1784 (3rd Sunday of Lent) in the court chapel. Assistants were Abbot Benedikt Lurz from Neustadt am Main Monastery and Provost Franz Xaver Schreiber from Heidenfeld Monastery .

Provost Zösch had the collegiate church completely refurbished in the early classicist style. The stucco work, the altars and the pulpit were made by Materno Bossi (1739–1802). The confessionals, the choir stalls, the tabernacle and the large figures of saints in the high altar are attributed to the Würzburg court sculptor Peter Wagner (1730–1809). The Electorate Court painter Januarius Zick (1732–1797) completed the ceiling paintings in 1786, depicting the church patrons Peter and Paul. The altarpiece by Oswald Onghers from 1694 has been preserved. The Kitzingen organ builder Franz Josef Zettler built a new main organ between 1785 and 1791 using the old pipework, although there was a long dispute about Zettler's performance and its completion.

The Triefenstein Monastery suffered just as much as all other southern German monasteries under the French invasion of the Revolutionary Wars in 1796 and 1800. Provost Zösch experienced the seizure of ownership in the course of secularization on October 18, 1802 from his sick bed, so the monastery dean Ambrosius Andres had to convene the convention and hand over the keys to the princely Löwenstein repeal commissioner. Zösch died soon after, on November 23, 1802 or shortly before. On November 24, 1802, the three monastery villages and the canyon were joined to the Principality of Löwenstein-Wertheim- Freudenberg.
