life and work

Onghers learned from Jean-Baptiste le Saive the Elder in 1641 . J. There is evidence that he was in Mainz in 1653 and in the same year he painted an altar painting for Bamberg Cathedral depicting the Assumption of Mary. The work is now in the Catholic parish church of St. Martin in Forchheim . In 1660 Onghers came to Würzburg, where he married in 1663 and received the title of electoral court painter. He took on numerous church commissions, he made 17 paintings for the Würzburg Cathedral alone (three of which have been preserved and are kept in the Haug Abbey ). For the Würzburg Cathedral in 1659 he created the altarpieces of the Beheading of John the Baptistand martyrdom of St. Kilian , in 1660 a Christ on the Mount of Olives and in 1662 the image of the Assumption of Mary, burned in 1945 . In addition, Onghers created many portraits and made a name for himself in the field of genre, still life and landscape painting. His works can mainly be found in the churches of the Diocese of Würzburg . In contrast to other works that were privately owned during the firestorm of 1945, numerous drawings from Ongher's estate have been preserved by the Mainfränkisches Museum in Würzburg . Onghers 'figures are influenced by Rubens' pathos, in the early days he was based on the elegance of the artist van Dyck . In 1706 Onghers gave one of his daughters to the Würzburg court sculptor ( statuarius aulicus ) Jakob van der Auwera, who was also from Mechlin , who had been working in Würzburg as a sculptor for the Juliusspital since 1700 .
