Heinrich Göbhardt (born December 5, 1742 in Bamberg ; † July 25, 1816 there ) was a Cistercian and the last abbot of the Bronnbach monastery near Wertheim .

Life

Heinrich Göbhardt, baptized Ludwig, was the youngest son of the bookseller Martin Göbhardt zu Bamberg, where he was born on December 5, 1742. He studied philosophy there under Andreas Seelmann , who later became Auxiliary Bishop in Speyer, and then went to Würzburg to study theology at the Cistercian College. On May 15, 1764 he entered the Cistercian Abbey of Bronnbach, which had many novices at the time, defended theses from theology in Würzburg in 1771 and then studied law. Returning to Bronnbach, he devoted himself to his studies until he was elected abbot on August 5, 1783.

Prince-Bishop Franz Ludwig von Erthal infuled him at the same time as provost Melchior Zösch of Triefenstein Monastery on March 14, 1784 (3rd Sunday of Lent ) in the court chapel. Assistants were Abbot Benedikt Lurz from Neustadt am Main Monastery and Provost Franz Xaver Schreiber from Heidenfeld Monastery .

During the secularization of 1803, Göbhardt wanted the Bronnbach monastery to be converted into a grammar school. When this was not possible, he went back to his hometown Bamberg on April 30, 1803 with a pension of three thousand guilders, where he died of stone disease in 1816. His grave is in St. Getreu .
