Memento Mori - Memorial of Death (Original title: Yeogo Goedam Du-beonjjae Iyagi , 'Schauergeschichten der Mädchenoberschule Part 2') is a South Korean horror film by Kim Tae-yong and Min Kyu-dong from 1999. It is the second part of Whispering -Corridors row. The film is considered to be one of the first of the Korean New Wave to focus on a lesbian relationship.

action

The plot of the film is told non-linearly with flashbacks. Min-ah finds the diary of her classmates Hyo-shin and Shi-eun. They took turns writing in this diary on different days. She quickly learns that both are in love with each other. But one day Hyo-shin sleeps with her class teacher and meets with him more often. This hurt Shi-eun, but they talk about it openly. However, their relationship remains cracked. They didn't see each other over the summer vacation. When the annual health check-up is due, Hyo-shin jumps from the school building. Shi-eun immediately becomes suspicious of having something to do with it. But Min-ah gives her an alibi. In fact, Shi-eun and Hyo-shin were talking on the roof beforehand.

Hyo-shin was pregnant by her teacher, which would have been noticed on the health test. That's why she chose suicide. Over time, supernatural things happen in the school. Min-ah finds out that Shi-eun kept their distance after they both came out. The teachers thought their relationship was nonsense, their classmates ridiculed them. But Hyo-shin couldn't handle the distance. The teacher is visited by Hyo-shin's spirit and dies.

reception

After Derek Elley of Variety , directors Kim and Min took a well-known genre - girlish sexuality and its destructive power - and turned it upside down. The film offers a seamless tension of disbelief, which works well until the film's finale. But the end with the students trapped around school buildings with the vengeful spirit of Hyo-shin seems empty after a careful, atmospheric construction. The performance of the young leading actresses is good, especially that of Park Yeh-jin. Technically, the film is at the highest level. In the lexicon of the international film you can read that Memento Mori is stylishly staged and photographed coherently. The film packs "the topic of same-sex love into a cautiously developed horror story" and addresses aspects of the youth drama.
