Memramcook is a village ( Village ) in Westmorland County in the Canadian province of New Brunswick with 4831 inhabitants (2011), the predominantly Acadian French speaking.

geography

Memramcook lies on both sides of the Memramcook River and on the east bank of the Petitcodiac River , on the opposite side of the river is Hillsborough . Moncton borders to the northwest and Memramcook to the southeast, Dorchester . The connecting roads New Brunswick Route 2 , New Brunswick Route 106 , New Brunswick Route 925 and New Brunswick Route 933 run through the village.

history

The first inhabitants of the area were the Mi'kmaq Indians , in whose language the name Memramcook means something like "curved river". Many Acadians who had been displaced by the British from other areas settled there. This is why the place is also known as Berceau de l'Acadie or Cradle of New Acadia (cradle of the new Acadia ).

On May 8, 1995, the Village de Memramcook was officially founded.

Today the inhabitants are primarily active in agriculture, in small industrial companies and in tourism.

The Lefebvre Monument was added to the list of National Historic Sites of Canada in New Brunswick .
