history

Wills Hill, Earl of Hillsborough

Acadians farmed the area in the 1700s and named the place Blanchard's Village . As part of the Seven Years' War in North America , the Battle of Petitcodiac broke out on September 4, 1755 and British units destroyed the Acadian settlements as part of a punitive expedition . New settlers immigrated from Germany via Pennsylvania in 1765 . The town was named in honor of the Lord and Earl of Hillsborough, which also known as Wills Hill, 1st Marquess of Downshire with the addition of Secretary of State and Lord Commissioner of Trade and Plantations , is known in Hillsborough renamed. The livelihood of the inhabitants was initially the timber industry and shipbuilding, later also the extraction of gypsum from mines . After the commissioning of the Intercolonial Railway in 1876, various goods could now be transported by rail as well as by sea. In November 1966 Hillsborough received the administrative status of Village , similar to a Village in the United States.

Because of its proximity to the attractions of Hopewell Rocks and Fundy National Park , tourism is becoming increasingly important for Hillsborough and is becoming the main livelihood for the population.
