Mendel Hirsch
Mendel Hirsch (born March 3, 1833 in Oldenburg ; † March 28, 1900 in Frankfurt am Main ) was a German-Jewish educator and Bible commentator, but also emerged as a poet.
Life
The eldest son of Samson Raphael Hirsch studied philosophy, psychology, literature and history at the universities of Bonn and Berlin , received his doctorate in Tübingen in 1854 and from 1855 taught Jewish and general subjects at the Jewish secondary and elementary schools in Frankfurt that his father founded active on the Main ; From 1877 on, he was the director of the Israelite secondary school (founded in 1853) and was also head of the Jewish elementary school for 17 years and brought both institutions to a considerable bloom.
He published articles on educational topics in the monthly magazine Jeschurun , edited by his father.
In a letter to the editor, Der Zionismus (1898), Hirsch opposed the political Zionism of Theodor Herzl , at the same time viewing it as a concession to the fact that Jewish assimilation had failed.
His daughter Rahel Hirsch (1870–1953) was the first woman to be appointed professor of medicine in the Kingdom of Prussia .
