Meta Sander

Meta Sander (born September 8, 1906 in Engers -Mühlhofen ( Rhineland ), † May 9, 1996 in Wismar ) was a German gynecologist and obstetrician .

Life

Meta Sander was born as the daughter of the businessman Jean Schnock and his wife Josephine. In 1926 she completed her school education in Cologne with the Abitur. At the University of Cologne she studied medicine from 1926 to 1932. There was a Medizinalpraktikantenjahr at the Cologne university hospitals and institutes which they awarded the degree of Dr. med. finished. In 1933 she moved to Greifswald in Western Pomerania . There she worked as an assistant at the hygiene institute until 1935. In 1935 Meta Sander went to Rostock to work as an assistant at the hygiene institute. In 1940 she moved to the University Women's Clinic at Rostock University. From 1943 she worked at the surgical university clinic before moving to the gynecological clinic in 1944. Since 1943 she trained midwives in addition to her work. From 1948 to 1951 Meta Sander took over the medical management of the nursing school in Rostock. In 1950 she became a senior physician. From 1953 to 1959 she was a lecturer in obstetrics and gynecology. From 1958 until her retirement in 1971 she worked full-time as the head physician at the Wismar Women's Clinic, and she was a part-time professor in the field of gynecology and obstetrics at Rostock University. In 1959 she was the first female professor in the GDR to specialize in gynecology and obstetrics.

She was involved in setting up the Society for Gynecology. More than two dozen doctors completed their doctorates under her leadership. Meta Sander set accents in gynecological cancer surgery, introduced them and radiological contact therapy. Even after her retirement, Sander headed the clinic's pregnancy counseling service and women's assistance. Meta Sander was married to the professor of hygiene Fritz Sander.

Honors

In 1965 she was awarded the title of Honored Doctor of the People . In Schwerin Werdervorstadt a street named after her.
