Metropolitan station

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Metropolbahnhof is a category in the train path pricing system of DB Netz AG .

As part of the new train path pricing system in 2018, DB Netz AG introduced the “Metropolitan Stations” and “High-volume border points” category.

Sections of day long-distance traffic that lie between two such stations or border points fall under the speed-dependent tariff "Metro Day", even if stops are made at non-metropolitan stations in between. If these connections only touch one or no such train station or border point, or do not begin or end in such a train station, these sections fall under the more favorable uniform tariff "Basic".

This group of metropolitan train stations contains traffic stations that are used by more than 50,000 passengers per day. Most of them are therefore category 1 and 2 stations and larger S-Bahn stations. Of the 21 category 1 stations, only Dresden Hauptbahnhof does not fall into the metropolitan station category.

High-volume border points were defined to map metropolitan traffic abroad. This includes border operations points with more than 5,250 long-distance trains in the last completed network timetable period.

The list is updated every five years, i.e. for the first time for the 2023 network timetable, based on the 2020 data.

Due to the fact that EU Directive 2012/34 was not adopted into German law in good time, the official introduction of the metropolitan station category originally planned for 2017 did not take place until the train path pricing system 2018.
