Metro Valencia is the metro and tram network of the Spanish city of Valencia . It was created in the late 1980s from a merger of various suburban routes (all opened at the turn of the century) and the opening of a connecting tunnel. The complete system is operated by the part-state Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat Valenciana (FGV).

Route network

Line network (as of March 6, 2015)

It comprises nine lines, which also include lines 4, 6 and 8, which are run as a tram. All routes are meter gauge. In contrast to the Alicante light rail system operated by the same company, the route network in Valencia is technically divided, with the tram lines using tram dimensions for wheelsets and track. A car transfer between the subnetworks is therefore not possible.

history

Line 1 (Bétera - Empalme - Torrent - Villanueva de Castellón)

Line 1 train in Torrent Avinguda

The 1 was the first light rail in Valencia, the tunnel section was officially opened on October 8, 1988.

The route can be divided into three parts:

  • Bétera-Empalme: Overland railway-like route with single-track sections. Before 1998, the Llíria – Empalme line was part of Line 2, which no longer exists
  • Empalme – Torrent Avinguda: Metro in frequent intervals, completely two-track
  • Torrent – Villanueva de Castellón: Single-track overland railway

In the city center, a cycle of up to 7.5 minutes (on weekends 10 minutes) is driven, at the outer branches an unclean hourly cycle.

Line 2 (Llíria - Empalme - Torrent - Torrent Avinguda)

This line was re-established in 2015 after being merged with Line 1 in 1998. She took over the western branch of line 1 (Llíria - Empalme). The Empalme - Torrent route is used by both lines. The section Jesús - Torrent with a total of eight stops is also served by line 7. The Torrent to Torrent Avinguda tunnel opened in September 2004. It offers a direct connection to the center of the city of Torrent. Torrent Avinguda is thus the southern terminus of lines 2 and 7.

Line 3 (Aeroport - Rafelbunyol)

Alameda station

Until the opening of the first part of the second inner city tunnel in 1995, the route to Rafelbunyol was one of the overland routes that ended at the current Pont de Fusta tram stop (like all other routes to the north).

In 1995 the first part of the new inner city tunnel , Palmaret - Alameda , was opened. Alameda lies in the former river bed of the river Túria, which was diverted in the 1960s after a flood disaster . It was built with four tracks and designed by the well-known architect Santiago Calatrava .

On May 16, 1998, the line was extended to Avenida del Cid , where it was connected to line 1 by a connecting line in front of the Xàtiva station . In this intermediate section, the new Bailén station was opened in 2005 , offering easy transfer options to the Renfe train station in Valencia Norte. The stations are bright and friendly, and a lot of glass and marble are used.

In May 2005, the line between Quart de Poblet and Riba-Roja de Túria via Manises-Valencia Airport , which had been operated by the Cercanías Valencia until then, was closed, converted to meter gauge and electrified. In the urban area of Riba-Roja de Túria, however, the route has been shortened, and it ends on the outskirts. For this purpose, a tunnel was built under the Turia river from the Quart de Poblet station to the existing Mislata-Almassil station on line 3 (now 5). The tunnel was opened in 2006, and in 2007 a short branch line from Rosas train station to Manises-Valencia Airport went into operation.

Since then, line 3 trains have been running to the airport . A single ticket (ABCD zones) cost € 3.90 at the ticket machines in May 2013. The route to Riba-Roja de Túria was taken over by line 9.

Line 4 (Mas del Rosari / Ll. Larga Terramelar / Feria Valencia - Empalme - Dr. Lluch)

tram

Line 4 is the first to be implemented according to tram standards and does not use any tunnel sections. It is the only one that still touches the old suburban train station Pont de Fusta , which has been completely rebuilt. In contrast to lines 6 and 8, which were set up later, it is served by one-way wagons, but there are several turning loops.

The line opens up the northeast of the city and in particular connects the universities. Your eastern terminus is on one of the beaches.

Line 5 (Aeroport - Maritim-Serreria)

For the section Torrent Avinguda - Bailén see line 1. For the section Aeroport - Alameda see line 3.

The branch from Alameda to Ayora with three stations was only opened in 2003. The stations are kept very modern.

In the inner city area there are two branches that reinforce Line 1 and Line 3 respectively. The latter - like line 3 - connects the airport with the city center. Originally it was planned to extend the trains of the line 5 from Aeroport to Riba-roja de Túria, eventually the newly created line 9 was used on this branch line.

The Xàtiva station is located at the central Valencia Norte train station, from which the Cercanías Valencia S-Bahn trains also run .

At the other end of line 5, a tram-like extension to the port - newly built for the America's Cup - was created. At the Maritim-Serreria station, it is possible to change between the two types of train. This is line 8.

Line 6 (Tossal del Rei - Marítim Serrería)

The first part of line 6 was inaugurated on September 27, 2007. It connects the Levante UD stadium with the city center, crosses metro lines 3 and 9 at Benimaclet station , runs past the universities towards the sea and ends in the port area. There you can change to metro lines 5 and 7 and to tram line 8. The plan is to later make the line run in a ring. Between Primat Reig and the loop in the southeast, the vehicles on lines 4 and 6 run on the same tracks.

At the moment (as of 2018) the following stops are served with line 6:

  • Tossal del Rei
  • Sant Miquel dels rice
  • Estadi del Llevant
  • Orriols
  • Alfauir
  • Primacy Reig
  • Benimaclet
  • Vicent Zaragozà
  • Universitat Politècnica
  • La Carrasca
  • Tarongers
  • Serreria
  • La Cadena

Loop: (towards Marítim Serrería )

  • Eugenia Viñes
  • Les Arenes

Loop: (towards Tossal del Rei )

  • Dr. Lluch
  • La Marina

Continue after the loop towards Marítim Serrería

  • Mediterrani
  • Gray Canyamelar
  • Francisco Cubells
  • Marítim Serrería

Line 7 (Marítim-Serreria - Torrent Avinguda)

This line was created in 2015 from two branches of line 5. It connects the Marítim-Serreria station, the terminus of the four lines 5, 6, 7 and 8 with Torrent Avinguda, which is also the terminus of line 2. She uses the Bailén tunnel to do this. Bailén is the only station that does not share line 7 with other lines.

Line 8 (Marítim-Serreria - Marina Reial Joan Carles I)

This line was also only set up in 2015. It has only four stops, three of which are also served by line 6.

Line 9 (Alboraya Peris Aragó - Riba-roja de Túria)

On March 6, 2015, the 9.4-kilometer branch line of airport line 3 to Riba-roja with four stations went into operation. It is served by the new line 9, which strengthens line 3 between Alboraya-Peris Aragó and Rosas.

Future planning

Tranvia de la Costa

This project name refers to the connection of line 5 from Ayora with tram line 4 (which may be renamed T1) in the east of the city. It contains another underground station (J. Monsoriu) , the rest is very similar to a tram. The opening was in 2007. Currently (summer 2007) the train runs as line 8 to the Marina Reial Joan Carles I station, which is located directly at the port built for the America's Cup .

T2

A new tram tunnel is being built across the city center in a north-south direction, which will cross the existing 3/5 metro lines in Xàtiva at the city's main business center. Further access points will be set up (in north-south direction :) Els Serrans (in the Túria river bed), Carme , Mercat , Xàtiva , Estació Central , Russafa , General Urrutia and Germans Maristes . A possible connection of the route to the Tranvia de la Costa is planned.

Accidents

On July 3, 2006, a metro train on line 1 derailed due to excessive speed between the stations Plaza de España and Joaquín Sorolla-Jesús . 43 people died.

On September 9, 2005, an accident occurred on the same line in which three trains were involved and 29 people were injured.
