Metulla ( Hebrew מְטֻלָּה Məṭullah , Plene :מטולה) is the furthest north in Israel . It is located about ten kilometers north of Kirjat Shmona on the border with Lebanon . The Iyyon , a tributary to the Hasbani , flows east of Metulla ; Not too far away is Mount Hermon .
The place was founded in 1896 by Baron Edmond de Rothschild after the Lebanese Christian Jabur Bek Junbalat sold the land. The aim of founding the settlement was to create a new home there for Jews expelled from Eastern Europe. The economic basis of the village was made up of fruit, wine, grain and cattle breeding. Today the economy of the place is based on fruit growing and tourism. Metulla had 1,599 inhabitants in 2018.
Metulla is known for its Canada Center, an international center for ice sports. Metulla is a popular vacation spot in both summer and winter; There are various places to stay and restaurants in town.
