The Meuroer Graben ( Lower Sorbian Kśinica , the Kiesbach) is an old source brook and earlier Stakweg of the Pößnitz and Wolschinka . Its headwaters are located south of the village of Freienhufen and northeast of the village of Drochow in Lower Lusatia . Its current confluence with the Pößnitz is located south of the village of Meuro . Because of the lignite mining, some of the streams were dried up and others were captured by the Meuro opencast mine and the Ilse mine . Nowadays the Meuroer Graben is largely canalized, the lignite mining led to a high concentration of iron hydroxide , its water is colored ocher brown and the iron hydroxide sludge is deposited in its river bed. With the flooding of the Großräschener See and concrete renovation measures, the Meuroer Graben and the Pößnitz will be able to regain quality in the future.
