Michael Bates (composer)

Michael Bates is a Canadian double bass player and composer.

Bates studied with the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra's first bassist , Yoshio Nagashima , at the University of Toronto with Don Thompson and Dave Young and in New York with Mark Helias and Tony Falanga . He composed more than 200 works a. a. for chamber ensemble, string quartet and for double bass solo. In addition to four of his own albums with his quartet Outside Sources (with Quinsin Nachoff , Russ Johnson and Jeff Davis ), he recorded several albums as a sideman. He toured Europe, Asia, the US and Canada and worked with musicians such as Chris Speed , Matt Moran , Michael Blake , Gerald Cleaver , Dan Weiss , Ziv Ravitz , George Garzone , John Stetch , Michael Attias and Michael Sarin .
