Russ Johnson

Russ Johnson (born July 8, 1965 in Racine , Wisconsin ) is an American improvisation and jazz trumpeter .

Russ Johnson, who comes from the American Midwest , worked in the New York music scene from the 1990s in the fields of jazz, improvised and new music . He leads his own formations such as the Save Big quartet and is a member of the collective ensembles The Other Quartet and New Math . He was part of the New Nonet by Lee Konitz and the Steve Swallow / Ohad Talmor L'Histoire du Clochard sextet, with whom he also toured internationally. He has also worked with Kenny Wheeler , Joe Lovano , Marc Ribot , David Liebman , Joe Maneri , The Jazz Passengers , Oliver Lake , Anthony Davis , Curtis Fowlkes , Roy Nathanson , Tony Malaby and Mat Maneri . With Roy Nathanson, Myra Melford , Brad Jones and George Schuller , he performed his version of Eric Dolphy's Out to Lunch in 2011 .

In 2013 Johnson returned to Milwaukee, where he has since worked as a lecturer at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside in Kenosha. Since then he has also played a. a. with Jason Stein Michael Musillami , Ken Vandermark , Fred Lonberg-Holm and Tim Daisy . In the field of jazz he was involved in 50 recording sessions between 1994 and 2011, including a. also on recordings by Jon Irabagon , Michael Bates , Noah Preminger , Diedre Rodman , Nicolas Masson , Jason Rigby , Christof Knoche , Jenny Scheinman , Ken Thomson , Tommy Meier and the TILT Creative Brass Band (2011, with Shane Endsley , Jacob Garchik and Kevin Norton ).
