Nicolas Masson (* 1972 in Geneva ) is a Swiss jazz musician ( tenor saxophone , clarinet , bass clarinet , composition).

Live and act

Masson came to improvised music at the age of 20 as part of a world tour: In New York he met Cecil Taylor and the drummer JR Mitchell, after which he studied with Frank Lowe and Makanda Ken McIntyre . Back in Geneva, he continued his jazz studies at the Conservatoire Populaire du Musique until he graduated in 2000. He also completed master classes with Lee Konitz , Dave Douglas and Misha Mengelberg .

Today he is considered one of the leading figures on the new Swiss jazz scene. He played with Ben Monder , Gerald Cleaver , Kenny Wheeler , Kris Davis , Eivind Opsvik , Russ Lossing , Colin Vallon , Tom Arthurs and more. He has made several recordings with his international quartet since 2002; in Switzerland he is also on the road with his quartet Parallels . In addition, the collaborative trio Third Reel was formed in 2010 with the Italians Roberto Pianca (guitar) and Emanuele Maniscalco (drums, piano) , with whom he has released two albums on ECM Records since 2013 . He has been part of Bänz Oester & The Rainmakers since 2017 .
