Michael Diekmann (born December 23, 1954 in Bielefeld ) is a German manager . From 2003 to 2015 he was CEO of Allianz SE and since May 2017 he has been its chairman of the supervisory board .

Life

Michael Diekmann grew up in the East Westphalian town of Bad Salzuflen as the son of an entrepreneur who ran a family-owned road and bridge construction company in the third generation with around 100 employees . 1973-1982 he studied philosophy and law at the University of Göttingen and then moved from 1983 to 1988 a written his own canoe guide in self-publishing .

In 1988 he began his career at Allianz as assistant to the branch manager in Hamburg. Three years later he became sales manager in Hamburg, after another two years he took over the management of the Hanover branch, after which he moved to Munich as head of private customer management. Following this, he took over the management of the sales department in Cologne, where he became a member of the management of the branch for North Rhine-Westphalia. In 1996 he was sent to Singapore to develop the Asian business. In 1998 he was appointed to the board. On April 29, 2003, he succeeded Henning Schulte-Noelle as CEO of Allianz SE . Diekmann is also chairman of the foundation board of the ESMT European School of Management and Technology .

In 2005, Wirtschaftswoche magazine named Michael Diekmann Manager of the Year .

In June 2006 Diekmann came under public criticism when, in parallel to the announcement of record profits (of over 4 billion euros annually), he announced the cutback of 7,500 employees of the Allianz Group.

According to the Allianz SE remuneration report, Diekmann's remuneration in 2005 was around 2.4 million euros plus share-based remuneration of around 45,000 virtual shares / options. According to the Süddeutsche Zeitung, his total remuneration for 2009 was 4.8 million euros .

In March 2011, an Allianz spokesman confirmed that Diekmann's contract, which ran until the end of 2011, was extended to the end of 2014. In October 2014 it was announced that Diekmann will hand over his position as CEO to Oliver Bäte on May 7, 2015 .

In addition to chairing the supervisory board of Allianz SE, Diekmann holds supervisory board mandates at BASF , Fresenius and Siemens . Since April 2016 he has also been a consultant to the international law firm Linklaters .

Michael Diekmann is married and has four children.
