Michael Ebert (photographer)

Michael Ebert (born September 2, 1959 in Wuppertal ) is a German photographer and university lecturer. He is also active as a curator and author.

Live and act

After an internship at a sports photo agency, he worked as a photo journalist for daily newspapers and magazines. From 1982 to 1987 Michael Ebert was a member of the specialist committee for photo journalists at the German Association of Journalists (DJV). From 1991 he moved to the central communications department at Telekom , where he was responsible for photography. In 1996 he left Telekom to work again as a freelance photographer and publicist, mainly for companies and magazines. Customers included Deutsche Telekom, Panasonic Japan and Miele. His free work can be found on book titles, CD covers and in newspapers such as FAZ, Neue Züricher and the Süddeutsche Zeitung. He also advised companies on cultural and technical issues relating to photography. In 1994 Michael Ebert was appointed to the German Society for Photography (DGPh) and has been affiliated with the Hamburg picture agency Visum since 1997 . In the 2000s, Michael Ebert, as an author and lecturer, increasingly dealt with cultural and historical aspects of photography, especially photojournalism. In this context, he has curated photo exhibitions with, among others, Will McBride , Pierre Gassmann , Letizia Battaglia and Pulitzer Prize winners Horst Faas and Nick Út . Ebert is a member of the Dr. Erich Salomon Prize and the “Rückblende”, the German competition for political press photography.

Michael Ebert is a member of the executive board of the DGPh and was elected to the board of the Mannheim_Ludwigshafen_Heidelberg photo festival in 2005 . From 2007 to 2009 Michael Ebert was a lecturer in photojournalism at the Gelsenkirchen University of Applied Sciences and in 2008 founded the first German photojournalism course together with the communication scientist Renatus Schenkel at the Magdeburg-Stendal University of Applied Sciences . Since 2013 he has also been teaching photojournalism and documentary photography at the University of Hanover . Michael Ebert is married to the art historian Sandra Abend.
