Michael Foerster (ophthalmologist)
Michael Heinrich Foerster (born December 15, 1943 in Windsbach ) is a German doctor , scientist , university professor and ophthalmologist .
Live and act
He studied from 1963 to 1969 in Tübingen, Miami and Berlin. From 1966 he was a doctoral candidate in neurophysiology at the Free University of Berlin and received his doctorate in 1971 on the discharge patterns of retinal neurons .
From 1990 to 2010 he headed the Benjamin Franklin University Eye Clinic at the Free University of Berlin, and later the Charité University Eye Clinic in Berlin on the Benjamin Franklin campus.
During this time he developed proton therapy for eye tumors, a special form of radiation therapy that can be precisely dosed and focused.
Memberships
- From 1996 to 2004 he was President of the Retinological Society .
- From 1998 to 2005 he was on the board of the German Ophthalmological Society (DOG) .
- From 2002 to 2008 he was Secretary General of the European Society of Ophthalmology (SOE).
Honors
- 2005: Federal Cross of Merit for his achievements in ophthalmology
- 2014: Georg Klemperer Medal of Honor from the Berlin Medical Association for the development of proton therapy for eye tumors
- 2017: Albrecht von Graefe Medal for his services in the field of oncological ophthalmology
