Michal Franek

Michal Franek (born January 18, 1967 in Žilina ) is a former Slovak boxer and younger brother of the boxer Ján Franek .

Career

He was 1985 in Romania junior world champion in light middleweight by a point victory over the Russian Valeri Denisenko. There he was named the best boxer of the tournament.

Franek did not achieve an international title. In 1986 in the USA he lost to the Brazilian Da Silva through a controversial point decision in the preliminary round. It was similar in 1987 at the European Championships in Italy . Franek lost against a Finn with 2: 3 judges' votes. For this he won the Intercup in Germany in 1987 .

At the 1988 Olympics in Seoul , Franek had bad luck at the draw and already met in the preliminary round against the later multiple professional boxing world champion Roy Jones Jr. Franek lost on points 0-5.

In 1989 Franek got the medal places: At the amateur boxing world championship in Moscow he was defeated in the quarterfinals by the German Sven Ottke . At the European Championships in the same year he made it to the final and was defeated by Henry Maske by point decision. He also lost to Sven Ottke at the next European Championships in Sweden in 1991 and became vice European champion.

In a comparison match for his club ZTS Dubnica , which should serve as preparation for the 1991 World Cup, he suffered a knockout defeat in the first round against Marco Theuer . The consequence of the defeat against Theuer Marco (FRG) was a several weeks protective suspension , and Franek could not take part in the world championship.

For the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona / Spain he achieved the necessary qualification. In the first fight of the tournament, however, he lost against the later Olympic third party Seung Bae Lee from Korea with 2: 6.

After his boxing career, Franek was a trainer in the youth field. He was several times amateur boxer of the year in the CSSR.
